Bessbrook toddler: Man charged with attempted murder Bessbrook toddler: Man remanded on attempted murder charge
(about 14 hours later)
A 24-year-old man has been charged with the attempted murder of a two-year-old girl in County Armagh. A 24-year-old man has been remanded in custody charged with the attempted murder of a two-year-old child in County Armagh.
The child remains in a critical condition in hospital after an alleged assault in Bessbrook on Sunday. The child was discovered in a "lifeless" outside her home in Bessbrook on Sunday. Police officers who had been in the area gave CPR.
The man was arrested after police went to a house in Charlemont Square East following an altercation involving several people. The girl had suffered a fractured skull and remains in a critical condition in hospital.
The toddler was taken from the house after apparently suffering serious head injuries. Darren Eamon Fegan, with an address in Craigavon, denies the charge.
The man is due to appear at Banbridge Magistrates Court sitting in Newry on Thursday. Det Insp Keith Gawley told Banbridge Magistrates Court, sitting in Newry, that he had consulted a neurology expert.
He said: "The skull was so badly fractured that it would be a blunt trauma injury and that was all that he was prepared to say at that time."
The court heard that the toddler's mother had told the police officers that the accused had punched her daughter.
However, Mr Fegan claimed, during eight interviews with police, that the child's mother fell from the fifth stair at a house while holding the girl.
He claimed the child's mother had been drinking and taking drugs all day.
The senior officer accused him of lying and changing his story.
The accused will appear in court again in four weeks time.
