The man charged in connection with the abduction of University of Virginia student Hannah Graham has been charged in a 2005 sexual assault case in Fairfax City, Fairfax County prosecutors announced Monday. Fairfax County Commonwealth’s Attorney Ray Morrogh provided details of the charges against Jesse L. Matthew Jr. at a 4:30 p.m. news conference at the Fairfax City police headquarters. The new charges include attempted capital murder, abduction and sexual assault. Jesse L. Matthew Jr., 32, of Charlottesville, was charged with attempted capital murder, abduction with intent to defile and sexual penetration of a 26-year-old woman on Sept. 24, 2005.
Fairfax County prosecutor Ray Morrogh and Fairfax City police chief Karl Pardiny declined to discuss details of the case.
“The victim is grateful to the lead detective,” Morrogh said. “He promised her he would never give up and he didn’t.”
Morrogh said his office will file for a bench warrant on Thursday, seeking his extradition to Fairfax County to face charges.
