The Crofting Commission has begun the industry's largest data-gathering project.

The Inverness-based regulatory body is sending out a census to more than 18,000 crofts.

The commission hopes that the survey will gather important information that will help to gauge the current state of crofting.

It will be used to guide the Scottish government and other agencies in their work to preserve the way of life.
