Version 0 of 1.

First, the great news: HBO announced on Wednesday that plans to launch a stand-alone streaming service next year, which – for those of us holding on to cable packages solely for Game of Thrones or Girls – means no more expensive TV bills.

The not-so-great news: the cat’s cradle of passwords just got more wound-up – now that more cord-cutters are on the way, get ready for another password or 10 that family and friends will inevitably ask you to “borrow”.

We all have that one friend. The one who asked for your Netflix password way back when, who promised he wouldn’t rate any movies or shows to guard the sanctity of the hyper-specific Netflix algorithmic perfection you had achieved. Fast forward a few years, and your account is still being used at all hours of the night, your recommendations are filled with Michael Bay movies, your categories are begging for that new spate of Adam Sandler “originals” – and now Friends is on the way.

Or maybe, you are that person. Maybe you are the one abusing your cable-bill-paying friend’s HBOGo account, and maybe tonight he is going to press “resume” on that Game of Thrones episode, but you’re two ahead, and: Sorry! I promise I’ll sign up for HBO’s new standalone thing next year!
