A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said people would "be aware" of damage caused to the car involved. Det Ch Insp Phil Jones said: "There are a couple of vehicles that are of interest to us.
"We would particularly like to speak to the driver of a small light-coloured three-door hatchback, possibly with a stripe through the centre of the roof of the vehicle, which passed through Bruton at about 8.30pm," he said. "One is a light-coloured three-door hatchback which potentially has a large stripe on the roof that was seen around 8.35pm yesterday evening.
"We believe the driver may be able to assist us with our investigations." "A call has [also] been received by us detailing a dark-coloured Range Rover-type vehicle on a '61 plate that again was driving through Cole Road at speed at around the relevant time.
"We are interested to locate both the drivers of those vehicles in order to establish whether they were involved or have got some important information for us."
