Thieves used gas to blow up a cash machine at a bank in Bristol in the early hours.

Police were called to the HSBC bank on Bath Road, Brislington, at 02:30 BST.

Officers said cylinders had been used to pump gas into the machine to cause an explosion, and the thieves had been "successful" in their bid to steal cash.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said: "A quantity of money was found lying on the ground."

He said it was believed a number of men wearing dark clothing were involved in the incident.

Officers are looking at CCTV as part of their investigation.
