No let up in drink drive campaign

There will be no let up in the campaign to curb drink driving in the run up to Christmas, the police have warned.

The number of drivers and motorcyclists caught drink driving during the first two weeks of this year's winter campaign has dropped by 16%.

Figures show 182 drink drivers were detected during the first two weeks - 35 less than the same time last year.

Acting Chief Inspector Rosie Leech said officers would again be out in force over the festive period.

Last month, police on both sides of the Irish border said they would also be targeting hungover drivers over the Christmas period.

The PSNI and Gardai have warned party-goers to think twice before getting behind the wheel if they have been drinking the night before.

It takes the body about an hour to get rid of a standard drink. This equates to half a pint of beer, a small glass of wine or one pub spirit measure.

Last year, 602 people were detected drink-driving in Northern Ireland.
