Kilt

Audrey Horne, Sherilyn Fenn’s character, is Twin Peaks’ answer to 1950s sweater girls. She pairs her short-sleeved fluffy jumpers (a noughties fave, of course) and red lipstick with a knee-length kilt, a look that sums up her good-girl-going-bad character. Add socks and brogues to really underline the point.

Checked shirt

Donna Hayward, Bobby Briggs, Mike Nelson ... the checked shirt was key to the wardrobe of Laura Palmer’s classmates. Wear yours done up and demure, like Donna, or round your waist, like Bobby. Joan Smalls – spotted at fashion week with a shirt round her waist – is already on the trend.

Leather jacket

James Hurley is a heartthrob of Twin Peaks – the secret boyfriend of Laura Palmer and later the love interest of her cousin Maddy. Like a brooding update on James Dean, he’s got all the markers – the motorbike and the leather jacket. Unlike Dean’s, his has a fluffy collar which makes it very winter 2014.

Chunky patterned jumper

You have a choice of muse here – Lucy Moran, the screwball secretary at the police station, or the Log Lady, who has inspired many a Halloween costume over the years. Both wear the kind of sweaters that would make Bill Cosby proud. You should too.

Varsity T-shirt

Nadine, the overgrown cheerleader, proves there’s (sort of) hope for all of us over high school age who want to dress as if we’re in Glee. The eyepatch and, indeed, screw loose, might be best avoided but you can bite her grown-up varsity style with something like this T-shirt. Pompoms optional.
