The love letters between Princess Diana and Dodi Al Fayed sweep the headlines with revelations about the extent of the princess's affections. The Daily Mail's headline uses a quote from one of the various letters: "Dodi, you've brought joy to this chick's life". The Telegraph reprints the letter on its front page under the headline "Diana's letters of love to Dodi". The Daily Mirror says the letters should dismiss forever the notion that it was a fling or a casual affair. Designer babies The Times reports a looming ethical controversy over designer babies after the fertility watchdog approved testing the unborn for a high cholesterol gene. The Guardian looks to Burma for a snapshot of fearful lives 10 weeks after the failed uprising led by monks. The paper says thousands of civilians have emerged from prison with accounts of brutal torture. The Mail highlights the 550 UK police stations that have closed since Labour came to power in 1997, some replaced by kiosks and vans. Christmas climate Both the Independent and the Guardian sound a sour note over climate talks in Bali, labelling them both lacking in ambition and depressing. The impact of a traditional British Christmas lunch on climate change is the subject of study in the Times. The paper calculated that preparing the festive meal produces 51,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide - equivalent to a car travelling 148 million miles. It singles out the innocent cranberry as a major culprit on the dinner plate, given the air miles associated with flying the berries in from North America. On the upside, the Daily Express reports that jitters in the retail market means the January sales are already underway on the High Street. |
