Police held at gunpoint by driver

Thames Valley Police were pursuing a black VW Golf from Oxford in to Didcot when the driver got out in Kynaston Road and pointed the gun at an officer. The man then ran into Didcot Cemetery and the area around it, including two schools, was sealed off. No shots were fired and nobody was hurt but pupils were kept inside their schools as a precaution. If [people] see this person, do not approach him, but contact the police and we will respond immediately Chief Supt Paul Sullivan Thames Valley Police said a full police response, including armed officers, was sent to the area after the incident at 1255 GMT. Officers spent an hour searching the cemetery with a police helicopter and dogs, but the suspect was not found. They are now carrying out a wider search around the Didcot area. Pupils at St Birinus School and Willowbank Primary School who were told to stay inside were later allowed to go home. Chief Supt Paul Sullivan, who is leading the operation said: "Nobody has been shot or harmed in this incident and we are now carrying out a number of inquiries in an effort to find this man. "I wish to advise members of the public that if they see this person, do not approach him, but contact the police and we will respond immediately." The suspect is described as black, 5ft 9in (1.75m), in his late teens or early 20s, with short afro-style hair. He was wearing jeans, trainers and a black puffy jacket. |
