Papers hail Italian head coach
http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/rss/-/1/hi/uk/7143736.stm Version 0 of 1. The arrival of a new England football coach captures headlines across both the broadsheets and the tabloids. Fabio Capello's new job is roundly praised in the Times and the Independent, while the Guardian zeroes in on the Italian's love of art. The Daily Mail reports that the deal to bring in an Italian "backroom" of assistants has yet to be finalised. The Daily Express says Capello will also name an English coach, most likely former England captain Alan Shearer. PM 'derided' Competing with Capello for column inches is Gordon Brown's late arrival in Lisbon to sign the new EU Treaty. The Independent sums up the mood, saying that the Prime Minister was "derided" for his late arrival. It is a theme taken up by the Telegraph which believes Mr Brown's approach to Europe is a departure from that of every PM since Britain joined the Common Market, which is to be wholeheartedly engaged. The Daily Mail weighs in as well, attacking Labour over its failure to hold a referendum on the treaty. 'Dearest Pa' Two words - "Dearest Pa" - appear across the front of the Times and the Mail as they follow the inquest into the death of Princess Diana. They are the words used by the princess when writing to her then father-in-law Prince Philip. In extracts from their letters shown to the jury, the Times says they show how Diana had turned to Prince Philip as a marriage counsellor. The Daily Mirror says the letters prove that the Duke did not hate Diana. Rock woes Northern Rock's ongoing travails has the Guardian predicting a government contingency plan to nationalise the ailing bank in the New Year. The paper says that the government believes the prospects for a quick sale are being hampered by the turmoil in the world's financial markets. The Times believes it is essential that the whole matter is sorted out in time for Christmas. The paper says the sudden departure of Adam Applegarth, Northern Rock's chief executive, has only added to the impression of a shambles. |
