A guide dog has been attacked by a pit bull-type terrier that was running loose in the centre of Wolverhampton.

His blind owner Kevin Lloyd who was with four-year-old German Shepherd Watson at the time of the attack said his dog was lucky not to be killed.

Watson received wounds to his head and has been left timid and shaken by the incident, which happened in the city's Princes Street on Friday.

Witnesses told Mr Lloyd the loose dog looked like a pit bull-type terrier.

'Absolute tragedy'

Mr Lloyd, of Wednesbury, said: "I was just walking towards the bus stop when I heard someone shout: 'Quick, grab the dog' but within seconds my guide dog was attacked really ferociously.

"If it had been a smaller dog or a small child I really do think it could be an absolute tragedy."

Mr Lloyd's MP Tom Watson has now called for urgent action to ensure the dog is found and caught before any other pets or people are attacked by it.

West Midlands Police have urged anyone with information about the attack or the whereabouts of the dog to contact them.
