Abuse court secures convictions

A pilot domestic abuse court in Glasgow has dealt with 691 cases in its second year, according to new figures.

The pilot, based in Glasgow Sheriff Court, deals with domestic abuse cases from the city's south side.

Figures show it had a conviction rate of 86%, with 594 cases in the past year resulting in a guilty plea or verdict.

It is designed to fast-track cases and provide support for those who experience abuse. The effectiveness of the court will be evaluated.

Communities Minister Malcolm Chisholm said: "This specialised court reminds us all that domestic abuse is a crime. It must not be, and will not be, tolerated.

"The pilot appears to have made a difference to the lives of those involved - such as speeding up the time it takes for cases to come to court."

In its two years the court has dealt with 1,248 cases, with a conviction rate of 84%.

Mr Chisholm added: "It is being fully evaluated and we will continue to consider ways in which we can support those taking this often traumatic, brave step to seeking justice."

Assist, a special support service, is holding a conference to mark the anniversary.

The service had 1,392 referrals over the two years.

The court will continue to operate while it is evaluated.
