Version 0 of 1.

Along with Scream, Final Destination, The Faculty and others, I Know What You Did Last Summer was a key player in the 1990s high water mark for attractive high-schoolers getting offed on film. And now with seemingly every last bit of intellectual property from that decade coming back around again, the slasher flick is getting rebooted.

Sony Pictures have hired Mike Flanagan and Jeff Howard to shepherd the remake, based like the original on a 1973 Lois Duncan novel – the pair are behind the well-received recent horror Oculus. The original’s producer Neil Moritz, also behind the Fast and Furious and 21 Jump Street franchises, is on board.

The tale of a mysterious hook-wielding fisherman who stalks a group of teenagers, I Know What You Did Last Summer starred the none-so-late-90s quartet of Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ryan Philippe, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prince Jr. Made for $17m, it generated $125m worldwide and prompted two sequels: I Still Know What You Did Last Summer and I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer.

Its fellow 90s slasher success, Scream, will also be back soon, this time on TV. Bob and Harvey Weinstein are executive producing the pilot for MTV which like the original film focuses on the cliques of a US high school facing down a serial killer.

There are other shocks in the offing from Flanagan and Howard before their remake though – next up is Somnia, about an orphaned child whose nightmares are made manifest, and Peekers, about the residents of a community being gradually replaced with creepy grinning doppelgangers.
