Libya: Airstrikes Are Aimed at Militias Libya: Airstrikes Are Aimed at Militias
(about 2 hours later)
Unidentified warplanes conducted four airstrikes on Monday near the Libyan capital, Tripoli, leaving one dead and five wounded, a spokesman for Libya’s Islamist-allied militias and a militia commander said. A recent series of airstrikes, which American officials have said were carried out by Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, has reinforced the perception that Libya has become a proxy battleground for larger regional struggles with Turkey and Qatar backing the Islamist militias, and Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the U.A.E. supporting their opponents. Mohammed al-Gharyani, a spokesman for the Libya Dawn militia alliance, said the airstrikes on Monday hit the town of Gharyan, 50 miles south of Tripoli. A militia commander said the strikes had targeted Libya Dawn ammunition warehouses and weapons depots.
