A 28-year-old woman has been arrested by police investigating the murder of a horsewoman who was stabbed to death in a paddock.

The 28-year-old was held on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder in connection with the death of Penelope Davis, 47, a supermarket worker, who died as she tended her horses.

Davis, known as Pennie, died from multiple stab wounds in the New Forest. Her body was discovered by her widower, Pete, in a field near Beaulieu, Hampshire, on 2 September.

Hampshire Constabulary said another suspect, a 36-year-old man, remained in police custody on suspicion of Davis's murder after officers gained a further 36 hours to hold him.

The developments came as detectives appealed again to anyone who had information about the killing to come forward.

They want to hear from anyone who may have seen anything suspicious near Davis's workplace, a branch of Sainsbury's on Hampton Lane, Blackfield, between 1.30 and 3pm on 2 September. The mother left work and drove her dark green Toyota Land Cruiser to the field by Leygreen Farm near Beaulieu, where she was found later that day.

Meanwhile, a woman appeared in court on Thursday charged with assisting an offender and intending to pervert the course of justice in connection with the inquiry. Leanne Doyle, 24, of Beech Crescent, Hythe, was released on bail at Winchester crown court. and will appear again at the same court on 1 October.

A 22-year-old man previously arrested on suspicion of murder and a 37-year-old man held on suspicion of assisting an offender have both been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

The Crimestoppers charity has offered a £5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Davis's killer or killers.

Her children, Sophie, Alex, Georgia, Daniel and Josef, and her widower have described her murder as "long" and "agonising". They added that they had been "overwhelmed by love and support" since the killing.
