Play was suspended in the first round of the KLM Open on Thursday when Paraguay’s Fabrizio Zanotti was hit on the head by a golf ball.

Zanotti, who won the BMW International Open earlier this season, was on the 16th fairway when he was injured by a ball struck from the 14th tee.

The 31-year-old received treatment on the course and was then taken to hospital.

Zanotti had started his round from the 10th at Kennemer Golf Club, near Zandvoort in the Netherlands, was level par after six holes when the incident occurred.

Spain’s Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño went to visit Zanotti and reported on his Twitter account: “Just came out of the hospital and happy to say that Fabri is doing fine.

“He is in good spirits and just waiting to get discharged.”

Less than an hour later, the Paraguayan sent his own tweet, confirming that he had been given the all-clear to leave the hospital and that he would rest up to recover.

He said: “Thank a lot for the messages, I have been discharged from the hospital. Now I will have to take a couple of weeks off.”
