Mr Darwin turned up at a north London police station last weekend, after being presumed dead since 2002. A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police confirmed the force had arrested "a 55-year-old woman" in connection with allegations of fraud as part of an investigation being headed by police in Cleveland.
She said the woman would be taken away by Cleveland police to be questioned.
There has been no confirmation of which flight Mrs Darwin arrived on, or of reports armed police boarded the plane to arrest her after it landed.
Mrs Darwin's detention follows the arrest of Mr Darwin, who turned up at a north London police station last weekend, after being presumed dead since 2002.
