Mr Sharif had applied to stand for two Lahore constituencies. Mr Sharif returned from exile last month. He was overthrown in a 1999 military coup led by the then head of the army, General Pervez Musharraf.
It is not clear if the commission has barred him in both constituencies. He returned from exile last month. President Musharraf resigned from his army post last week.
Mr Sharif has until Friday to appeal against the ban.
