South Wales Police are appealing for anyone who knew the fire victim, or who has any information to contact them.
They said the dead man has not yet been officially identified and officers are attempting to contact his next-of-kin.
The cause of the fire is being investigated but it is not thought to be suspicious, police said.
'Bit of a shock'
Scenes-of-crimes officers are at the scene and police have described the incident as "serious".
Neighbours said the elderly man had only been living in the area for a short time.
One said: "I didn't know him that well. It was all a bit of a shock. I looked out of the window and I could see all the smoke."
He said neighbours either side of the burning property were helped by other people in the street, after being forced to leave their homes due to the smoke.

A preliminary investigation has taken place and more inquiries into the fire will begin at 0900 GMT.
