Version 0 of 1.

Police shot at a man who was threatening officers with a suspected firearm when they were called to a domestic incident in Liverpool.

Officers went to Alderney Road, Vauxhall at midnight after a 999 call in which a man was heard screaming and saying he was being attacked by a dog.

Police were threatened by a man from a window and a shot was fired due to the threat from the "agitated male".

The man, thought to be 33, suffered grazes and lacerations to the head.

Police said he was taken to hospital for treatment to the wounds, which are not believed to have been caused by a bullet.

He was later arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent to cause violence, and a Staffordshire bull terrier was seized from the house.

A 50-year-old woman and a 16-year-old boy were also in the property at the time, police said.

The matter has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Assistant Chief Constable Darren Martland said: "The decision for an armed officer to fire a weapon is never taken lightly.

"Fortunately, in this instance, no officers were injured."
