Former Conservative MEP Martin Callanan said he was "very happy" to be being made a peer.
Mr Callanan was leader of the Conservative group of MEP's before he lost his seat for the North East of England in the European elections.
He said he was "happy to take up the offer" of a peerage because "I want to remain involved in politics".
