Strathclyde Police said a Vauxhall Corsa appeared to have lost control, left the road and ended up on the railway line near Cumnock. Police believe the Vauxhall Corsa had been on the track near Cumnock for about an hour before it was hit at about 0240 GMT.
A full scale search was then launched for a man and a woman who had been in the car. Investigators said the car, which had plunged from the nearby A76, was empty when it was hit by the train and pushed 400 metres down the track.

The car appears to have plunged on to the track at about 0240 GMT from a bridge on the A76 at Boreland Farm. It involved two helicopters, police dogs and network rail staff.
