Leader of Mendip District Council Harvey Siggs said it was important the council "reacted accordingly" to the claim. Bomb disposal experts have been called in to safely dispose of the device, which is believed to be a projectile.
He said: "If it is nothing, then we've spent money not successfully but wisely, at least in terms of we will have done what we can to make sure something is safe." The military will be able to positively identify the object.
He said experts believe that until any device is uncovered and exposed to air it cannot be a threat to people or property. Mendip District Council has thanked people affected by the disruption for their patience.
