Coal train in collision with car Man arrested over train collision

A locomotive hauling a cargo of 1,800 tonnes of coal has collided with a car near Cumnock in East Ayrshire. A 20-year-old man has been arrested after a freight train crashed into an empty car in East Ayrshire in the early hours of the morning.
No-one on the train was injured in the crash early on Saturday morning but a search has been launched for the driver of the car. Strathclyde Police said a Vauxhall Corsa appeared to have lost control, left the road and ended up on the railway line near Cumnock.
Police and other emergency services are hoping to establish whether the driver was injured or had left the scene. A full scale search was then launched for a man and a woman who had been in the car.
No-one on the train, which was hauling 1,800 tonnes of coal, was injured.

A Sea King helicopter from HMS Gannet has been used in the search. The man has been charged with road traffic offences.
