Rescuers found more than 30 survivors on Monday in southwestern China as they dug through homes shattered by an earthquake that killed at least 398 people and injured more than 1,800, the authorities said. About 12,000 homes collapsed when the quake struck on Sunday afternoon in Ludian County, about 230 miles northeast of Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province, said Xinhua, the official Chinese news agency. It also said that firefighters had rescued 32 people and retrieved the bodies of 43 victims. Medical workers reported severe shortages of medicine and an inability to perform operations on the severely injured, while rescuers said their work was hampered by continuous downpours and landslides, Xinhua said.
