Evacuation for WW2 incendiary device removal from Frome garden

Residents of homes in Frome, in Somerset, are being warned to evacuate them when a suspected WW2 incendiary device is removed from a garden.

Police said officers had received "credible information" the device was buried in the garden of a house in Milk Street, 60 years ago.

Until uncovered and exposed to air there was no threat to people or property, Mendip District Council said.

One-hundred residents must leave by 07:30 BST on 6 August.

A rest centre is being set up at the nearby Oakfield Academy for affected residents to use free of charge from 06:30.

Councillor Harvey Siggs said: "Two full surveys of the garden have been carried out by experts and results show there is evidence of metal material buried in the garden of a property in Milk Street.

"Until the possible device is uncovered and exposed to air, experts have advised it presents no threat or risk to people or property.

"Experts also stress there is a low risk even when exposed."
