Papers dwell on Labour's donors

The Daily Mail says Gordon Brown had a "Commons mauling" from the Tories and the Lib Dems when his chief fundraiser admitted knowing about the donations. The Guardian states that the PM has been "drawn closer to the heart of the crisis" and tells of calls for a police investigation into the matter. "Hunt for the 'Real Donor'" is the headline in the Daily Telegraph. The Independent has a headline: "The Labour Party Game: Pass the Brown Envelope (Or Who Can Avoid the Blame in the Dodgy Donations Scandal?)" The Financial Times suggests Labour is "bracing itself for a fresh criminal probe", following the honours inquiry. Football arrests Several papers report on the arrest of the Portsmouth manager, Harry Redknapp, over claims that "bungs" were given to smooth along transfers. The Sun claims he was "furious" at the way detectives raided his Dorset home. The Times covers the case of the Briton accused of inciting hatred and insulting Islam by allowing her class in Sudan to name a teddy bear Muhammad. The paper says British officials are "trying to defuse a potentially explosive diplomatic row with Sudan" over its treatment of Gillian Gibbons. "'NatWest 3 Offer Guilty Plea Over Enron Case" is the headline in the Financial Times. It reports on the plea bargain agreed by three British former bankers. £1m table The Telegraph reports on the road safety device, the cat's eye. After 70 years they are to be replaced with more reflective solar-powered studs, invented by a London fireman. The Express reveals how an ornate giltwood table, thought to be worth over a million pounds, has been discovered in a York pizza restaurant. The paper says it "represents one of the most important pieces of Roman baroque furniture ever to come up for auction". It will be sold next week. |
