Michael Gove and Theresa May have been reported to Parliament's sleaze watchdog over their failure to register lavish hospitality at the Royal Opera House as the guests of a millionaire.

Labour has asked Kathryn Hudson, the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, to investigate whether the Chief Whip and Home Secretary should have declared tickets to the Royal Box at Covent Garden in the MPs' register of interests. Both claimed to have attended in their capacity as ministers.

As The Independent on Sunday revealed this month, the hospitality was funded by Dame Gail Ronson, an ambassador for the Royal Opera House, and her tycoon husband Gerald Ronson.

Mr Gove, who was education secretary at the time, and his wife Sarah Vine were with the Ronsons in the Royal Box for Carmen in January, while Mrs May and her husband Philip received the same hospitality during The Marriage of Figaro last October. The Royal Opera House told the IoS this month that the Royal Box cost £5,000 to hire out.
