Version 0 of 1.

1) The Commonwealth Games begins in earnest in Glasgow today. A few highlights from over the years – Allan Wells deadheating (if that’s a word) with Mike McFarlane in the 200m in Brisbane in 1982; Roger Bannister v John Landy in the ‘Miracle Mile’ at Vancouver 1954; Filbert Bayi v John Walker in a world record 1,500m at Christchurch 1974; and, perhaps best of all, Jason Statham competing in the diving for England at the 1990 Games in Auckland. Yes, that Jason Statham.

2) Five great cricket crowd catches – does exactly what it says on the tin.

3) The Tour de France reaches its conclusion with a potentially pivotal penultimate time-trial stage. With Vincenzo Nibali well clear (as it stands) it’ll struggle to match the greatest Tour finale ever – the 1989 time-trial shootout between Greg LeMond and Laurent Fignon.

4) Star Wars day at the Arizona Diamondbacks v Chicago Cubs.

5) There are own goals, and there are own goals. Step forward Milan Gajic …

6) Kids develop at different speeds. Sometimes that means sporting contests can be rather unfair. But the big guys don’t always win.

Our favourites from last week’s blog

1) An eight-year-old Rory McIlroy shows some promise, by chipping balls into a washing machine.

2) A tragic shambles: perhaps the most terrifying start to a Formula One Grand Prix ever witnessed – Belgium 1981.

3) More sporting Ted talks – Are We Born To Run?; The Difference Between Winning and Succeeding; and How Augmented Reality Will Change Sports
