Nigeria: President Meets With Parents of Schoolgirls Captured by Militants Nigeria: President Meets With Parents of Schoolgirls Captured by Militants
(35 minutes later)
President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday met for the first time with the parents of several hundred schoolgirls kidnapped from the town of Chibok and dozens of classmates who escaped their militant captors. Mr. Jonathan assured the group of his determination to have the captives “brought out alive,” a presidential spokesman told reporters afterward. At least 11 of the parents have died since the kidnappings by Boko Haram in April — seven in a village attack and four of health problems, residents said. Tuesday’s meeting came after some parents refused to meet Mr. Jonathan last week. For months the parents had been asking to see him, and he finally agreed to do so after a request from the young Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai.
