The court heard that police found the family home in an unkempt condition, and social services were called in.
The young girl - who cannot be identified - was taken to social services offices, where her mother attended about an hour later.
'Oblivious to risks'
When interviewed, the mother said she left the girl alone unsupervised once for 20 minutes while she did the school run while the child was asleep in bed and a second time for 40 minutes when the little girl was watching television.
She admitted leaving her alone on a couple of previous occasions but said it was not a regular occurrence.
Prosecutor Matthew Ellis said "she seemed oblivious to the risks and dangers of leaving her alone."
Defending, Bethan Jones said the woman has since given up work and her husband has changed his working pattern to help look after the children so this will not happen again.
In addition to the community order, the mother must attend a 'positive thinking' course run by probation officers.
