An 18-year-old driver was sentenced to serve four years in a young offender institution after his passenger was killed in a crash in West Sussex. Harry Smith had admitted causing death by dangerous driving after Jasmine Elkasmi, 16, from Bognor Regis, died when his car rolled on to its side in Halnaker, near Chichester in September. Smith, from Tangmere, also admitted two charges of causing serious injury. Two other 16-year-old girls were seriously hurt in the crash. One was left paralysed from the waist down while the other suffered facial and dental injuries. Sussex Police said Smith had had his licence for about seven weeks before the collision and had been stopped by police on "a number of occasions due to the manner of his driving." Sgt Paul Wood said: "He had been issued with a section 59 warning, which meant that if he had been stopped again, his vehicle would have been seized." Smith was also disqualified from driving for four years and ordered to take an extended re-test before he can hold a licence again. |
