Carson Allen died three hours after being born at the City Hospital, Nottingham, on 3 July 2013.Carson Allen died three hours after being born at the City Hospital, Nottingham, on 3 July 2013.
Nottingham Coroner's Court heard Dr Andrew Simm say he was watching a junior colleague "like a hawk" but could not say what had gone wrong. Consultant Andrew Simm told Nottingham Coroner's Court he did not believe the cut to the skull was responsible.
The inquest will hear the results of a post-mortem test later. The coroner concluded the cause of death was accidental, after the scalpel went into the skull.
The court was told Claire Smith, 38, from Top Valley, did not think she could became pregnant after surgery in 2011. The inquest heard doctors were not carrying out an ordinary Caesarean section because the mother, Claire Smith, 38, had undergone a previous operation which complicated the procedure.
She only realised she was pregnant at 30 weeks and went into labour at 33 weeks. But the surgical team did not know about the earlier operation or the added complications it presented.
Doctors decided an emergency Caesarean was the only option.
Carson's parents have been present for the hearing.
