The Taliban has said it carried out the attack. It is not known how many gunmen were involved. The four insurgents who took part are dead, the authorities said, with one security official wounded.
Eyewitnesses said the militants took over an unused building near the heavily guarded airport. The Taliban said they carried out Thursday morning's attack which lasted for nearly five hours.
Authorities now say they have brought the situation under control, killing "all the insurgents involved". Deputy Interior Minister for Security Mohammad Ayub Salangi said the area was "completely cleared".
Senior police official Gul Agha Hashimi told AFP news agency the area had been "cleared" of insurgents. "The last insurgent has just blown himself up, because he knew [Afghan forces] were on the way to capture him," he said.
Eyewitnesses said the militants took over an unused under-construction building near the heavily guarded airport.
