The rescuers have been praised for their efforts to save the three. A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said both brothers were unemployed, and Ms Russell was a shop assistant. None of them had children.

A coastguard spokesman said: "The cruiser appears to have left Whitby Harbour and got into difficulties about 100 yards from the sea wall."
