An 11-year-old boy has been excluded from a Cardiff primary school for assaulting his head teacher.

South Wales Police said the pupil at St Paul's Church in Wales primary, Grangetown, admitted he had attacked Susan Jones.

The year six pupil was arrested and received a "reprimand" from officers before being excluded from the school following the incident last week.

Cardiff Council said he would be subject to the usual procedures.

Insp Tony Bishop said the police attended the school on 14 November following a call from the school reporting an assault on a member of staff.

"An 11-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of assault and, with his mother, attended Cardiff Central Police Station," he said.

Inspection

"He admitted the offence and received a reprimand."

A school inspection in January 2006, when Laurie Brown was the headteacher, recommended that governors, the headteacher and staff "improve further pupils' standards of behaviour, particularly in the playground".

The report, published in March last year, added: "In a number of year groups a small minority of boys occasionally find it difficult to remain on task and are too quick to resort to physical contact to satisfy disagreements.

"Teachers work diligently with these pupils to promote understanding and acceptance of school rules, but the pace of a few lessons is sometimes impeded."
