Sir Bradley Wiggins will not take part in the British Championships road race on Sunday after being ruled out by an injury.

Wiggins, who was recently omitted from Team Sky’s squad for the Tour de France, won the national time trial on Thursday in Newport. He was expected to compete in the Abergavenny road race but a Team Sky spokesman told the BBC that he had been ruled out. The nature of his injury has not been specified.

The former Tour de France winner was calm about not making the Sky team for this year’s event. “It’s disappointing on a personal level, but I think from a team point of view it’s probably the strongest team possible as it stands today,” he said.

Wiggins was also forced to withdraw from the Tour of Switzerland due to a crash. The Sky head Sir Dave Brailsford described dropping him was a “very, very tough decision. He has been a great champion, is a great champion. But my job is to pick a team to win.”
