The National Liberation Front of Corsica, a militant group that has staged attacks since the 1970s in its quest for Corsica’s separation from France, announced Wednesday in a surprise move that it would lay down arms. It urged politicians to “trace the outlines of a political solution” and “negotiate a new status with the French state.” Separatists have been behind many attacks, including the assassination of Claude Érignac, the island’s top official, in 1998. |
