The Foreign Office said consular officials were heading to the scene to offer assistance to the man's wife and surviving son. The mother of the two children is believed to have been on the beach and reportedly saw the tragedy happen.
She and the older son, aged seven, were taken to hospital in Tossa de Mar, the Spanish Centre for Maritime Rescue Coordination said in a statement.
