Gaza: Tunnel Blast Kills 5 Militants

Five militants affiliated with the Hamas movement were killed Thursday in what appeared to be an accident when an explosion ripped through a tunnel they had dug on the east side of Gaza City. An emergency worker also died, of smoke inhalation, while responding to the blast. Hamas, the militant faction that has ruled Gaza from 2007 until the formation of a Palestinian unity government this month, has long stored weapons in tunnels. Israel has carried out airstrikes in Gaza over the past week in response to rockets fired from Gaza into Israel, but Hamas did not blame it for Thursday’s explosion. Instead, the party’s armed wing said that the men were killed “while carrying out their jihadist duty in one of the resistance tunnels.”
