Statement due on Revenue problem Inland Revenue chairman resigns
(31 minutes later)
Chancellor Alistair Darling is to make a statement to MPs on what the BBC understands is a "major operational problem at H.M. Revenue & Customs". The chairman of Revenue and Customs, Paul Grey, has resigned.
The statement will be made to MPs at 1530 GMT. The resignation follows reports about the loss of taxpayers' confidential details, although it is not known if that is why he has decided to quit.
A Treasury spokesman said only that it related to an "operational" matter, and no further details have been given. The news comes ahead of a Commons statement by Chancellor Alistair Darling on "a major operational problem" at HM Revenue & Customs.
It is the second successive day that the chancellor has faced MPs, having been grilled over the Northern Rock situation on Monday afternoon. The statement, Mr Darling's second in two days, will be made to MPs at 1530 GMT in the House of Commons.
