One of the bridge swingers said they understood the council's duty to protect public safety. Access work
Gavin Hall is one of those who has jumped from the bridge wearing specialist safety equipment, including a harness, clips, straps and ropes.
He said: "This isn't a bit of washing line we are using, it isn't an elastic band that we are trusting our lives on and hoping it is going to work.
"This is equipment that is used at work for all different means of abseiling, climbing and access work.
"The ropes we are using could take another 10 people. One person jumping is not putting any stress on the rope itself."
Public safety
Many of those taking part work in the rope access industry and are familiar with the equipment and the ways of minimising the risks.
One said there was an "addictive" adrenaline rush from using what was effectively a Tarzan swing for grown-ups.
Another of the bridge swingers said they understood the council's duty to protect public safety.
