Businesses, shops and a school have been evacuated after a possible bomb was discovered at a building site in Newport with road closures causing congestion. Businesses, homes and a school have been evacuated after police said a possible bomb was found during building work in Newport.
Gwent Police were called to the Maes Glas Retail Park at 12:46 BST. A police cordon has been erected around the Maes Glas Retail Park causing traffic congestion and Docks Way is shut.
A force spokesperson said a cordon was put in place as a precaution resulting in road closures and congestion. Police were called at 12:45 BST. People are being advised to avoid the area.
The Army's Explosive Ordnance Division (EOD) has been informed. The 190-pupil St Michaels RC Primary school has been evacuated and pupils taken to Pill Millennium centre.
Newport council said St Michael's RC Primary School was evacuated as a precaution. Police said parents or guardians could collect their children from there.
Properties on Meldalgief Road and Marion Street have been evacuated.
There are reports that the device could be an unexploded World War Two bomb and the Army's Explosive Ordnance Division has been informed.
