Tunisia: Deal Paves Way for Elections
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/06/14/world/africa/tunisia-deal-paves-way-for-elections.html Version 0 of 1. Tunisian politicians announced Friday that they had resolved a longstanding dispute and had agreed to hold parliamentary elections before the country’s presidential vote. Holding legislative elections first had been the preference of the moderate Islamist Ennahda Party, which holds the most seats in the current national assembly. The opposition had preferred that the presidential election, which they believe they will win, to be held first. Friday’s decision paves the way for officials to schedule the elections before the end of the year. In 2011, Tunisians overthrew President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali, who had ruled for two decades, and assembly members adopted a new constitution in January. |
