Jamie McMahon murder defendants' 'mission to steal and rob'

A man found dead in a graveyard was attacked by two men "on a mission to steal and rob", a court has heard.

Jamie McMahon, 26, was on a night out and stopped at St Giles' Churchyard, Northampton, when the alleged assault took place on 2 October.

Michael Francis, 33, of St James Road, Northampton denies robbery and murder.

Mark Lewis, 19, of Clickers Drive, Northampton, denies murder and robbery, but admitted manslaughter. Both are on trial at Northampton Crown Court.

'Trainer imprint'

The jury was told that Mr McMahon, who was described as "easy-going and popular", was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

He had been out with friends in pubs and clubs on the night of Tuesday 1 October, and was last seen in the York Road area shortly after 02:00 BST the following day.

The court heard he stopped to buy a kebab, which he then ate on a bench in the churchyard.

Mr Francis and Mr Lewis attacked the snooker club worker, stamping on his face so hard they left behind the imprint of a trainer, the jury was told.

It was alleged in court that the defendants left Mr McMahon for dead, lying face down on the ground.

His body was found by a passer-by just before 08:00 BST.

The prosecution said Mr Francis and Mr Lewis stole £20 and Mr McMahon's iPhone, which they later sold for £10.
