Meanwhile there was growing speculation in the paddock about who would replace Adrian Newey as chief technical designer at Red Bull, following the team’s announcement before Sunday’s race that their multi-championship winning designer had signed a fresh long-term contract, albeit in a different role.
The favourite for the job is probably Red Bull’s experienced chief designer, Rob Marshall. But Dan Fallows, who became the new head of aerodynamics when Peter Prodromou was head-hunted by McLaren last year, is another outstanding candidate.
Red Bull announced that Newey had signed a new “multi-year agreement”. The announcement added: “As part of this new agreement Adrian will work on new Red Bull technology projects, as well as advising and mentoring Infiniti Red Bull Racing as it develops its Formula One cars over the next few seasons. The details of the new projects will be announced in due course.”
So Red Bull have seen off a £20m offer from Ferrari. In truth, although Newey had talks with Ferrari he was never likely to move to Maranello. It would have been a long-term contract and Newey never relished the prospect of entering the most political environment in F1.
But it is not all good news for Red Bull. It is understood that Newey has become frustrated by the increasing limitations imposed on his creativity by F1 regulations and he will be stepping back from his day to day involvement with racing.
He will continue as an adviser and mentor to the F1 team but will take on a wider engineering role which might include road cars and even boats.
The team principal, Christian Horner, said: “Some exciting new projects will be announced in due course.” There was a valedictory tone in Newey’s remark when he said: “I will have a little say in next year’s car, then be an adviser. I’m looking forward to different challenges. I’ve had a great time in F1.”
