Storm knocks out phones at Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor Ysbyty Gwynedd, Bangor, staff member 'hit by lightning'

The phone network remains down at one of the main hospitals in north Wales following heavy rain and lightning. A member of staff at a hospital whose phone network was brought down by a storm was hit by lightning through a window, it is understood.
The problem arose at Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor early on Saturday morning and managers say they are working hard to keep services "safe and operational". Phones at Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor remain down after the storm on Saturday.
Calls from outside the hospital are being answered by the switchboard at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, Bodelwyddan. The problem is thought to have been caused by a lightning strike to the main external mast.
More staff have been brought in as a contingency. It was also reported that lightning went through an open window leaving a worker with a minor injury.
One of the theories being considered is that the lightning struck the main communications mast at the hospital. The individual sustained a hand injury and was treated by medical staff immediately before returning to work on Saturday evening.
There was no damage to the building and general power supplies are unaffected. No patients were injured or harmed during the incident.
Hospital services are said to be running as normal. The storm struck early on Saturday morning and managers say they are working hard to keep services "safe and operational".
A Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board spokesperson said specialist contractors were on site trying to fix the problem. Staff and contractors are said to be working around the clock to fix the problem and more staff have been brought in as a contingency.
"The GP out of hours service is not affected, and patients who need to contact the GP out of hours service can do so on the usual number - 0300 123 5566," said a spokesperson. A spokesperson for Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board said: "We really appreciate the dedication and commitment shown by so many staff in Ysbyty Gwynedd over the last 24 hours, who have gone the extra mile to make sure patients and services are safe and not disrupted further.
"If members of the public need to contact Ysbyty Gwynedd, their call will be answered by the switchboard at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, and every effort will be made to deal promptly with the inquiry. "This includes doctors, nurses, other clinical and support staff including the IT team who have been working throughout the night with the engineers."
"Staff in Ysbyty Gwynedd are working extremely hard to keep all services safe and operational with the support of radios, pagers, mobiles and other specialist phones." Calls from outside the hospital are currently being answered by the switchboard at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd, Bodelwyddan.
