Elderly couple woken by burglars in Newry

An elderly couple have been left shaken after being woken by two burglars in the bedroom of their Newry home on Saturday night.

The couple were disturbed by a noise in the house on Newtown Road, before their bedroom door was forced open and two men entered the bedroom.

One of them was carrying an iron bar and the other a torch.

They demanded money from the couple before leaving with a handbag containing cash.

One of the men is described as being about 25 to 30 years old, about 5ft 8ins tall, slim, with fair hair cut short. He spoke with a Newry accent.

The second man was slightly smaller and of heavier build, with fair hair and a fair complexion.

Police have appealed for information.
