Seventeen police officers were convicted Friday of kidnapping and killing a 22-year-old man in custody in 2009 and could face the death penalty when they are sentenced on Monday, Indian officials said. Prosecutors said the victim, Ranbir Singh, had gone to the northern Indian city of Dehradun to look for a job, but he was he was accused of committing a robbery and was arrested by the police. He died in police custody in July 2009. The judge hearing the case also convicted the police officers of entering into a criminal conspiracy to kill Mr. Singh.
